What a Day This has Been, What a Rare Mood I'm in....

Well, I'm not exactly in a "rare" mood. more like "medium-rare." Suzy and I have just experienced what we call a "Steak Day" in our weight control program. We've been here in Carson City for a week, we've been traveling just over a month, and our scale is telling us to beware. So today was Steak Day. The whole day's food consisted of as large a well-marbled steak as we can eat, followed by a baked apple. That's guaranteed to take a couple of pounds off, and it doesn't cause any real hunger until about 3:00 in the afternoon. And today's steak was probably the very best steak I have ever grilled!

But it's been a great day overall as well. Great, but expensive. Big Red, Suzy's mobility scooter, has recently been having problems, which we have diagnosed as bad batteries. So we went to Batteries Plus and purchased two new 12 volt batteries. Ouch! They aren't priced like regular D cells!

We also stopped at Wal-Mart and bought some sweatshirts. Why? Well, we left home without much cold weather gear, and those days down at (the absolutely glorious) Oh Ridge taught us that we need to be better prepared.

As well, it was time for Suzy's monthly blood test to see how well she is enduring the level of blood clotting protection she is experiencing. She's had a couple of blood clots, the most recent after her knee surgery, so she is condemned to Warfarin the rest of her life. And it has to be monitored. No results yet; we have to wait. We have learned that there is a home kit (similar to what diabetics use) to take that test, and we are anxious to discuss that with her doctor when we see her in September).

To make today better, this is the first day since we've been here that there have been no black clouds floating above the Carson Valley. Recently we told you that "spring has sprung," but we didn't mention that winter was still hanging on. We've had active snow falling two of our days here, and yesterday, these clouds were pouring over the Sierra range into the valley. Brrrr!

Today things were clearer, we were able to sit outside and grill those delicious steaks just wearing tee-shirts (OK, pants, shoes, etc.). As we drove along US 395, we saw this wonderful old barn.

But wait! We promised you pictures of our great grandson Darren. Stand back, here they are!

A serious moment with a cracker
About to "high five" his Papa (that's me)

He does like his broccoli!

The obligatory bathtub shot, with modesty bubbles!
Okay, that's all of the Darren photos for tonight. No promises about the future.

By the way, it's been a while since we acknowledged our new followers. The several of you are hereby acknowledged! Please know that you are welcome, you are cherished, and we hope you'll leave a comment now and then, as you ride along with ... Our Life on Wheels!

  8. Darren has grown quite a bit since we last saw pictures of him. He's much more of a big boy now, not a baby.

I'm on warfarin, too, due to my heart valve replacement in 2009. Those monthly (or more often as necessary) blood tests are a pain, especially when we are traveling. But I appreciate the necessity for them. I don't know how the home meter works but I will have to see if it's available for me to use.

  9. Great pics of Darren, he sure looks like a happy little guy. I could definitely go for that steak and baked apple diet as long as I could skip all the days in between. Nice to see you're getting some warmer weather now.
