Snakes Alive? Nope

All the snakes here are dead. John and Sandy Weber see to that. John and Sandy are the proprietors of Rattlesnake Crafts and Rocks, where we spent an interesting hour last Saturday, after our visit to Old Pearce Heritage Days. Back in 1979, John and Sandy quit their desk jobs in Illinois and came to Arizona and the laid-back lifestyle of rattlesnake hunters. Yes, rattlesnake hunting is legal, as long as you have a valid Arizona rattlesnake hunting license and you follow the rules.

Rattlesnake Crafts is halfway -- 15 miles each way -- between Tombstone and Elfrida, Arizona, on the mostly gravel Gleeson Road. When you get to the sign, you turn onto Double U Ranch Road and drive another two miles on dirt.

And there it is, Rattlesnake Crafts and Rocks.

Your first impression is one of total absolute confusion of junk.

Then you start getting the feel of the place, and it becomes fun, following aisles and pathways down memory lane and into the blacksmith shop ...

Inside this old trailer are the actual rattlesnake craft items, such things as knife scabbards, wallets, key fobs, cell phone cases, useful and useless items. Even rattlesnake jerky.

Out front are spectacular displays of rocks and minerals; some are offered for sale at modest prices.

John and Sandy may be there, or they may not. You pay for your selected items by the honor system, using this small wooden box.

As you can see, Suzy really enjoyed our visit here to Rattlesnake Craft and Rocks.

One display that really grabbed her attention was this set of glassware. Reason? That jar on the right is identical to one she uses each holiday to serve her cranberry/orange relish!

  1. What a neat place! Sounds like you were smitten, dare I say, "bitten" by the ranch? Great photos and an enjoyable story line.

  4. I am not a snake fan, so they all being dead there would not be a problem for me.

Looks like an interesting place, could almost call it an art collection??

  5. Loved all the pictures. My mom used to have a dish like those pictured. It looks like a fun place to spend a few hours.

  6. What great photos, Jerry and Suzy, and what an interesting theme for a craft store. Yum, rattlesnake jerky. I wonder how fresh it is? I always enjoy seeing the blue sky that is present in most of your pictures. Sounds like you both had a fun day!

  7. We found Rattlesnake Crafts a rather unique place as well. We did meet John & saw Sandy go by helping him carry a large table. Lots of stuff there for sure & we found it all interesting. Not everybody's cup of tea but we like unusual places like that & we don't mind getting dust on our ourselves to seek them out. We never see anything like that back home in Ontario.

  8. Pretty interesting and unique place and well displayed with all your great pics too!

HOWEVER, with a name like Rattlesnake, I wouldn't get Paulette within shouting distance of that place!!

  9. The last time I was in Arizona the only rattle snake I saw was alive, and I left it that way.
