The Rest of the Story

Last time we were driving around the Sulphur Springs Valley of Southeastern Arizona, and we stopped for dinner at Margie’s Corner Cafe.IMG_5047 But we promised to show you the rest of the day, so here it comes!

Just south of Sunsites is the old-time town of Pearce. Is it a ghost town? Pretty near. In fact, Old Town Pearce sits along the Ghost Town Trail there in the valley. It was Sunday, and nothing was open. In fact, much of what’s there to see is on public display only in November! That’s OK – we were there, we looked, we took pictures, and you get to see them.

The old store in Pearce is a central point, and every November, the weekend of Thanksgiving, the store is open as a museum for Pearce Heritage Days.IMG_5062For more pictures of our visit to Old Town Pearce, we invite you to visit our Pearce Ghost Town Web Album.

As we drove around Old Peace, we found the Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. IMG_5076 The church has been closed and out of its original service for several years. However, it is recognized for its service to the community, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. The church was built in 1893. Today it is being used by the Sunsites Memory Project as a headquarter for planning future civic happenings.

Shortly after visiting the church, we met a local resident who was walking his dog. He told us the interior of the old church was nicely intact. We talked about the weather and the storms headed our way. He told us that the rain will probably be split by a mountain, moving north to Sunsites and south to the valley beyond, missing Old Pearce as it has done regularly in the past. I guess we’ll see, as the major California storms are moving in with a vengeance. If we don’t drown, we'll stay with you on … Our Life on Wheels!

  1. I see you must have convinced Al to go to Margie's to try that Chicken Fried Steak. We just may have to give it a try too! Nice picture of that little general store. Hope you don't get too much of the storms heading your way. I think we have about one more day of it here and then it should start to clear up for the weekend.

  3. When we get home we will pick you up and head for the chicken fried steak. If you keep taking these nice tours and putting them out I am going to save a lot of fuel and travel time. We are having the same bad weather here in Vegas that you are having so I have time to read some of your old blogs.

  5. That Pearce store is really nice inside. I was very impressed with how well they have kept it. Oodles of old stuff in there.

Larry the waiter at Margies told us you had been in the day before but was confused when we told him we had never been there before. Must have been somebody else told you about Margies.

  6. Thanks for stopping by my Blog! Always good to hear from you. We must be in the same boat...so to speak. We are not getting out near as much as planned...or would like. Things keep coming up...medically. We too have a few surgeries on the horizon...ugh. Just have to try to plan that Brian (husband) and I are not in the hospital at the same time! Being homebound...I've gotten sucked into playing FarmVille and I "hooked"! Can listen to music or watch what news I can stand to hear. Which isn't much these days. Take care..and stay in touch. (you wrote)Us too! We wre pretty much stationary during 2009, but 2010 will see at least one good trip. We'd love to leave Arizona for a second trip later, after our 50th anniversary party in August, but we'll probably be going through another couple of surgeries. Good things there are bloggers we can watch!
