...the Bombs Bursting in Air....

We watched the fireworks tonight. Our little town of Benson, Arizona, put on its annual fireworks show tonight, and we watched from our front porch, about three or four miles south of Lions' Park. The shimmering stars, the bursts of red, white and blue, the delayed booms and cracks as they exploded. The show lasted exactly one half hour, and the finale was spectacular! All of that, just for us, sitting on our front porch.

And while we sat, the blessed rain fell on our aluminum awning, and on our roof, and on our cactus garden, and on our car, all of which had been so accustomed to drought. Yes, it is MONSOON season! Like so much of the west, we have been dry! Wildfires abound. But tonight the rain started in abundance, and tomorrow we'll watch as the street in front of our front porch flows down to the wash at the east end of the park.

The water will continue to flow into the San Pedro valley between us and the railroad, and it will move on into the San Pedro River, one of the few rivers that flow northward from Mexico and eventually into the Colorado. Prickly pear and cholla and barrel cactus will drink it up, ocotillo will suddenly display their red flag blooms, and the giant saguaro will show their night flowers that draw the Mexican bats on their migration.

It is summer, it is monsoon, and we are blessed. Here at the Saguaro SKP RV Park, most of the 297 leaseholds stand empty, as their masters and mistresses are visiting other parts of the country. Only about 88 lots are inhabited, plus fewer than 10 visiting rigs can be found on the property. What a shame, as most of the cactus have just started (or in some cases finished) their blooming season. The "regulars" here seldom get to see the bright and showy cactus blooms!

But what about us, what about Jerry and Suzy? We are here for medical reasons primarily. Suzy has a new Pacemaker, Jerry is waiting for hip replacement surgery, and a few other things are letting us enjoy this park this summer. Also, we have traded our faithful Rosie, the 2001 Itasca motorhome, for a 5-year-old Prowler travel trailer. Can't go anywhere, because we don't yet have a proper tow vehicle. Our eyes and hearts are set on a Toyota Tundra. All we have to do is figure out how to pay for it.

With the new trailer, we have developed a renewed excitement for traveling, so look out, we may be out there in your backyard before you know it, as we move forward in ... Our Life on Wheels!

  4. Great to hear from you two and about your new trailer. I understand a hip replacement is much easier than knee replacement, so hopefully you will be up and about real soon.

Have a great summer and we hope you continue to solve those medical problems. It would be great for you two to be back on the road and writing some great blogs.

We are planning on returning to Tucson one last time next winter and hope we can meet up with you sometime while we are there.
