Weekend Visitors, in the Red

We had visitors this weekend! For the first time since we moved into this lot at the SKP Saguaro Co-op RV Park, we met a pair of Northern Cardinals! Suzy actually saw the male a day or two earlier, but Saturday the male arrived, landing in our recently pruned Texas Ranger. Shortly thereafter, his lady arrived. Both took advantage of our watering dish to bathe after their long arduous journey from wherever they had been.

Mrs. Red didn't pose well, and kept away from the camera most of the time.

Our water dish is purposely shallow because of the experience of friends. They had a deeper bowl at first, and enjoyed watching the quail coming to drink. However, baby quail got into the water and didn't have the ability to get back out, ended up drowning in the bowl! SO we have a shallow bowl with rocks to climb up on. We have a lot of quail families visiting our yard in spring, and we want them all to grow up strong and healthy.

We saw our first Northern Cardinal ever in 2003 down in Texas during our first year on the road. And we have had the Silver Cardinals here many times. Their true name is Pyrrhuloxia, but who can remember that?

Thanks for sharing a little of our wildlife in this part of ... Our Life on Wheels.

  1. We love the cardinals and blue jays in Ohio. To see them against the white snow is a beautiful scene.

Those baby quails are so cute.

  6. Nice Red photos, there! Sure do like the looks of the birds you get at your place. Lots different than what we see here. Today was mostly crows or ravens. Did see some geese, and some ducks...oh, yeah, and some old coots, too...but you probably see them all the time! Thanks for sharing. Glad you're both feeling better.

  14. Looks like this post slipped through the cracks on me. Just caught it this morning. Always so nice to see colorful birds & they don't get much more colorful than male red Cardinals. We are lucky to have them here in our Congress back yard as well as our Bayfield front yard back home. Had never seen a Silver Cardinal until we spotted them in our back yard here. Nice that you got to see them & maybe they will bring more of their friends......:))
