Did You Get to Church this Weekend?

Did you get to church this weekend? Or to the temple, the synagogue, the mosque, Wal-Mart, wherever you might go?

Whether you did or not, we’d like to give you a tour of some of the many churches we have seen in almost seven years on the road. We are Catholic, so most of the churches you will see are Catholic, but we’ve included a wider range (ecumenical, you know!). Some of these places are tiny, some are magnificent, some are very old, some are quite new, but they are all houses of worship, all worthy of respect.

This is one of our favorites: the Chapel of the Transfiguration in Grand Teton National Park. The view through the window behind the altar is spectacular.

Here's another tiny one: St. Clements church in Mammoth, Montana. They have a 5:00pm Mass on Saturday, as the circuit priest comes through.

On the larger side, the Mormon Temple in Manti, Utah. Manti is the smallest town in the world in which the church decided to build an international temple.

Mission Santa Barbara is called the Queen of the California Missions. We visited it at Christmas time.

Just outside the tiny town of Paxico, Kansas (population 211 on a good day), surrounded by corn fields, sits the Cathedral of the Flint Hills. It was built for a much larger population, but the railroad decided to go another direction and the town nearly died. Today it is a major antique center.

Elliott Prairie Community Church near Woodburn, Oregon.

Santo Nino Church near Alma, New Mexico.

In Alaska, many of the older churches are Russian Orthodox. This one is on a hill above the fishing town of Ninilchik.

An unusual church is the Lutheran Chapel in Rapid City, South Dakota. It is an exact replica of a church in Norway, and it's called the Stavkirk. A wonderful place to visit!

One of the most spectacular places we've seen is the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament outside of Cullman, Alabama. The Poor Clare Nuns maintain a 24-hour a day vigil of prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. We have a story to tell, if you are interested!

To end all of this, there's the Little Brown Church in the Vale. Believe it or not, the song was written first, and the songwriter later revisited the spot he'd been to, and found a church built there exactly as he had pictured it! Nearly 73,000 weddings have been performed in this little church in 150 years.

We've seen a lot more churches, and if you are interested in seeing more of them, you are invited to visit our web album. Just click on this next picture to get there.

  1. Another terrific post, Jerry. From the magnificent temples to the modest little churches, it was a great idea for a blog posting. I really enjoyed looking at those pics of the churches. What a view out of the window behind the altar of the Grand Teton's chapel. I wonder if anyone ever heard the pastor's sermons or just sat there staring out the window?

  2. I love your pictures.
You're right, it doesn't matter where you go to church. Just as long as you find a moment with the one true God.

  4. I enjoyed your beautiful photos so much. We went to the Presbyterian church in Haines, Alaska and they also had a fantastic view from the sanctuary. You could look out the window behind the alter and see the bay and mountains with glaciers. Wow, fantastic. Ninilchik....been there. Did you go to the Samovar Cafe for a meal? Fun place but, boy, did she see us coming. :)
