Hot Sauce

Do you use Tabasco Sauce? Do you know just how many flavors of Tabasco there are? Did you know there are Tabasco Sauce cookbooks?

Before we get saucy, let me tell you --

My knee surgery went well. Three holes in my knee, a bunch of swelling and bruising afterward. The doctor told Suzy my ligaments were in good shape, but that my meniscus was more badly damaged than he had anticipated. In fact, it was torn and “flapping in the wind” so that there was damage to my patella! As a result, I will be a candidate “before too long” for a full knee replacement! Whoosh! He’ll give me a series of injections that will hold off that eventuality for a while. I’ll find out more after my follow-up visit next week.

With this surgery, and Suzy’s medical situation, we’re not traveling right now, and the summer remains a large question mark. So, to spice things up, we’re going to periodically show you some of our early adventures. Many of you weren’t with us then, so this will be new stuff for you.
In May of 2003, we spent time in Louisiana.

The spiciest part of that time was a visit to Avery Island, the home of Tabasco Sauce.

Their Visitor Center was in one a series of brick buildings on the island.

Of course, no factory tour would be complete without a visit to the gift shop, where everything Tabasco was on display for sale, from aprons to tiny bottles of the red stuff to toys to coffee mugs … you get the drift. The property is nicely laid out, and the factory / visitor center / store area is only a small part of what’s available.

Mr. McIlhenny was a lover of nature, a world traveler and a collector. His property includes a very large egret nesting center, Asian gardens complete with an authentic centuries-old Buddha statue, and the occasional alligator.

Next blog post we’ll show you some pictures of all of that, from the archives of … Our Life on Wheels.

  3. Hi Jerry & Suzy,

Jerry, glad to hear the knee surgery went well but sorry to hear about the damage you have. Hopefully, you won't have to have the knee replacement anytime soon.

We also toured the Tabasco factory a few years ago. One of our Teton Rallies was held at Lafayette and that was one of the many places in the area that we visited. We also ate a lot of "crawfish" while we were there. Thanks for the memories.

    Hugs....Pat and mike

  4. Jerry and Suzy,

Hopefully, you will be able to hold off on that knee surgery for a long time. I'm doing the same with my cataract surgery for my gradually worsening vision but I must admit, it will be so good to be able to see well again some day. Ditto for you with walking, right?

I know we will enjoy your archives as you have been to so many places ahead of us. Keep 'em coming!

    Hugs to you both!

  5. Hi Jerry & Suzy... Glad to hear that your surgery went well... It is awful having problems with your knees... I know I am having a few issues too... I really loved all your Tabasco pictures. We went there last year and really enjoyed it & especially the store. We just about bought it out. They had samples of Habanera & Jalapeno ice cream... Sounds weird but I am telling you it was delish!!! Hope your recovery is swift and your back on your feet in no time...
